NAFLD is excess fat build-up in the liver that is not caused by alcohol.
Why it matters for PCOS
NAFLD, now also called MASLD, happens when fat accumulates in liver cells in people who do not drink much alcohol. It is closely linked to insulin resistance and excess weight. Because insulin resistance is common in PCOS, some women with PCOS carry a higher fatty-liver risk, so doctors sometimes check liver enzymes as part of a metabolic assessment.
In its early stages NAFLD often causes no symptoms and is picked up through liver-enzyme blood tests or an ultrasound. Results should be read by a doctor in the context of your overall health, not from a single number.
